Coach Leonardo Jardim signs one-year extension with Monaco

Monaco coach Leonardo Jardim has cut short speculation about his future by signing a one-year contract extension with the Ligue 1 champions.

The principality club's stunning domestic success had given rise to suggestions that Jardim, who also steered his side to the semifinals of the Champions League and Coupe de France, could leave, with a massive contract offer from China mooted in the French media.

The 42-year-old, who arrived at the Stade Louis II in 2014, had a contract that ran through to 2019, and has now added a further 12 months to that deal to cement his place at the head of the club's first team.

"The faith the club has had in me has always been essential for me. I feel an integral part of the club and of the principality," Jardim told the club's official website.

"The past three seasons have been exceptional, capped by the title win. We're going to now work with the ambition of continuing this project and making the club grow with the same passion that we have had since the start. I'm convinced the future will be very exciting."

Jardim has already lost Bernardo Silva to Manchester City this summer, and could see still more key members of his title-winning side leave with the likes of striker Kylian Mbappe, and full-backs Benjamin Mendy and Djibril Sidibe all potential departures.

Captain and last season's leading scorer Radamel Falcao recently signed a contract extension of his own, however, and Monaco vice-president Vadim Vasilyev believes Jardim has the ability to keep the club challenging both domestically and on the European scene regardless of the comings and goings in the summer window.

"He's one of the best coaches in European football, and despite offers, he has chosen to continue the adventure with AS Monaco," the Russian explained. "The work he has done since his arrival is considerable, the French title is the perfect illustration of that."
