Spain's Julen Lopetegui wants to move on from Gerard Pique controversy
Spain coach Julen Lopetegui has asked fans to "turn the page" on the Gerard Pique controversy and get behind the team in Friday's World Cup qualifier against Albania.
Pique gave a news conference on Wednesday to reiterate his commitment to the national side after upsetting some supporters for his stance on Catalan independence.
"We thought it was a good idea for Pique to speak in the news conference, defuse the situation and it came out naturally," Lopetegui told Onda Cero.
Pique made some emotional remarks on Sunday after Barcelona's 3-0 win over Las Palmas about the violent scenes related to the Catalonia referendum which had taken place in the region that day.
The Barcelona defender had voted, despite the referendum being declared illegal by the Spanish government.
"We need to be more positive in this country," Lopetegui said. "There are many more things that unite us than separate us in this country. Sport unites.
"I'm just a coach and I have to promote the values of sport and pass that on to my players. We have to turn the page with the Pique situation and it's time to focus on the game."
Lopetegui is confident that Spain fans will stand by the team at the Jose Rico Perez stadium.
"The fans in Alicante are very enthusiastic about this game and know the importance of it," he said. "I'm sure once the ball starts rolling, people will be delighted and be behind us. In order to play a good game, we need the fans cheering us on."
Spain are three points clear of Italy at the top of Group G with two games remaining heading into the Albania clash.
They need to better Italy's result against Macedonia on Friday if they are to qualify for next year's World Cup.
"We have to give this game the importance it requires," Lopetegui said. "Albania are one of the best teams defensively, not just collectively but individually. We beat them 2-0 last year but we played a great game and it was challenging.
"Albania is a national team that has talent, physicality and tactical order. Most of their players compete in the Champions League and play in Italy. Albania are going to demand the best from us and we have to be ready."
