Francesco Totti honoured with 2017 UEFA President's Award

UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin has chosen to honour Francesco Totti with the 2017 UEFA President's Award.

Totti brought an end to his 25-year career with Roma on Sunday, coming on as a substitute in the 54th minute of the 3-2 Serie A victory over Genoa, which clinched second place and Champions League qualification.

The 40-year-old, who has yet to reveal his future plans, led Roma to a Serie A title, two Coppa Italia crowns and two Italian Super Cups over his record 786 matches for the club in which he scored 307 goals. Only Silvio Piola has scored more than his tally of 250 Serie A goals.

Totti, who has claimed the 17th edition of the UEFA award, also won the 2006 World Cup with Italy, while he became the oldest scorer in Champions League history in 2014, netting three days after his 38th birthday.

Ceferin said in a statement: "The President's award recognises outstanding achievements, professional excellence and exemplary personal qualities. These attributes are personified by Francesco Totti -- a man who has given around a quarter of a century of his life playing for his beloved AS Roma.

"Congratulations, Francesco, for a fantastic career and for your extraordinary loyalty and dedication, to Roma and to football."

Previous winners of the UEFA President's Award include Paolo Maldini, Alfredo Di Stefano, Sir Bobby Charlton, Eusebio, Franz Beckenbauer and Johan Cruyff.

Meanwhile, UEFA has also announced it will create a Hall of Fame to honour Europe's top players.

The plans were revealed on Thursday by Ceferin ahead of Saturday's Champions League final between Juventus and Real Madrid in Cardiff.

Ceferin said: "We will spend the next few months creating all the criteria and we're sure that many players who played in Europe and finished their fantastic careers deserve a place in the hall of fame."
